What I first learned about Dr. Pantoja was that she had defended bilingual education, and that she was Puerto Rican like me! Unfortunately, I had never heard of her until two years ago. I was living on the island until 1997 and I don't recall hearing about her over there, either. Like me, there are many other Puerto Ricans who don't know about her legacy. That is why we are telling her story.
The historical accuracy and Dr. Pantoja's desire of having her community continue the work she started are critical to this story we are telling. By the end of this show, we would like the audience to think about ways they could get involved with their community. That's why the play is entitled "Chain Reaction", because of the impact she had on the community and the ongoing effects.
